University of Azores Gathers Experts to Shape Diversity Strategy in Key Focus Group

The University of Azores (UAc) took a significant step towards enhancing its diversity and inclusion efforts by conducting a pivotal online focus group as part of the EU-funded EXPER project. The session convened researchers, gender equality experts, and diversity practitioners affiliated with the university, providing a platform for critical dialogue on existing challenges and potential solutions on February 11, 2025.

The virtual format of the focus group facilitated by Consulta Europa, enabled stakeholders involved in various projects addressing gender equity and inclusion to contribute in the developments of a Diversity Strategy. Participants engaged in robust discussions concerning UAC’s current institutional policies and explored innovative interventions aimed at fostering a more inclusive university environment.

This initiative is a crucial component of the EXPER project, which seeks to develop a comprehensive Diversity Strategy for the participating universities under WP3. By gathering qualitative insights from those directly engaged in issues of diversity, gender equality, and inclusion, the project ensures that its strategies are grounded in real-world experiences and address the specific needs of the UAC community.

“The online focus group was invaluable in providing us with a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities related to diversity and inclusion at UAC,” stated Michelle Perello from Consulta Europa. “The insights gained from these discussions will be instrumental in shaping a robust and effective Diversity Strategy that reflects the diverse perspectives of our university community.”

The focus group addressed a range of topics, including the implementation of existing gender equality plans, the identification of barriers to inclusion, and the development of actionable recommendations for institutional change. The virtual environment allowed for a dynamic exchange of ideas, fostering a collaborative approach to addressing diversity-related issues.

The outcomes of this focus group will be integrated into the broader EXPER Diversity Strategy, which will provide UAC with a roadmap for advancing diversity and inclusion across all aspects of university life. The University of Azores remains committed to creating an equitable and inclusive environment for all its students, faculty, and staff.
