Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, October 29, 2024. The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) today hosted an insightful workshop on diversity and gender equality, engaging over 25 participants in a thought-provoking dialogue on these crucial issues. The workshop was organised as part of the activities within the EU-funded projects, EXPER and ATHENA Equality, supported by the Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe programs.

The agenda opened with welcoming remarks from Carmen Delia Díaz Bolaños, Director of the ULPGC Equality Unit, followed by Sebastián López, Vice-Rector of Research and Knowledge Transfer, who introduced the EXPER Project. The CEO of Consulta Europa Projects & Innovation, Michelle Perello, highlighted the joint efforts on gender equality and inclusion across both ATHENA and EXPER projects. Rosalía Estupiñán Cáceres, ATHENA principal investigator at the ULPGC, and Yaiza Gómez Yánez, gender equality specialist, along with the Rector of the ULPGC, Lluís Serra-Majem, shared early results and the impact of ULPGC’s gender equality plan.

Key segments included a presentation on the ULPGC’s Protocol Against Harassment and Violence Toward LGTBI Individuals by Arturo Montesdeoca Suárez, Doctor of Labour Law, and a panel discussion moderated by Yaiza Gómez Yánez. The debate featured voices from academia, student organisations, and the private sector, such as María Delgado, President of the Young Entrepreneurs Association, and Paula Falcón García, Equality Representative of the ULPGC Student Council.

The session brought together experts in gender equality, diversity, and social inclusion, creating a platform for collaboration and exploration of progressive strategies to foster inclusivity both within the university setting and in broader society. Attendees, including prominent figures in the fields of social policy and LGTBI diversity and inclusion, delved into discussions focused on the Gender Equality Plan of ULPGC, introduced under the ATHENA Project, and contributed to the Diversity Strategy of the EXPER Project through an interactive round table.

This workshop, exemplifies ULPGC’s and Consulta Europa’s shared commitment to enhancing gender equality and diversity through impactful dialogue and collaborative efforts. The outcomes will support the development of ULPGC’s Diversity Strategy and foster a more inclusive community for all.
