CLAB ULPGC Final Competition: Young Innovators to Present Sustainable Business Ideas with Real-World Impact

On December 11, the Science Park at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Campus de Tafira) will host the final competition for the CLAB ULPGC program. This event, held from 10:00 to 13:00 in Polivalente I, will showcase the innovative business ideas of four teams who have been working intensively on socially impactful projects as part of the CLAB ULPGC, under the European EXPER project (“Excellent Peripheries for a Strong European Research Area”).

Over the past months, participants have engaged in specialised mentoring sessions and expert consultations to shape their business plans using both customised templates and AI tools. The CLAB ULPGC, a program focused on fostering entrepreneurial skills and sustainable business ventures, aims to equip students, recent graduates, and researchers with the competencies to transform ideas into impactful enterprises. This initiative supports the broader goals of the EXPER project to strengthen research and innovation in Europe’s outermost regions by promoting collaboration between academia and the private sector.

The four teams will present their pitches, each highlighting a unique approach to sustainability, social engagement, and technological innovation:

  • Team 1: Canarias Retro – An educational non-profit organisation aimed at connecting Canarian youth with their cultural heritage. Through immersive activities, including recreations of iconic local photography, workshops, and cultural events, Canarias Retro seeks to deepen cultural awareness and appreciation among young people in the Canary Islands.
  • Team 2: Customised Tourism Platform – This online platform enhances tourism experiences by offering unique, personalised itineraries tailored to the preferences, age, and mobility needs of individual tourists. The platform emphasises exclusive local experiences to set it apart from traditional travel options, meeting the rising demand for unique, tailored travel experiences.
  • Team 3: Smart Water Management for Hotels – Focused on sustainability in hospitality, this business idea provides IoT-enabled water management services for hotels and apartments. Through room-specific metrics, the platform helps reduce water consumption and provides real-time statistics, with a user-friendly app for both hotel management and guests. The platform also features alerts for maintenance issues, promoting both efficiency and environmental awareness.
  • Team 4: ScanMyCity – An urban traffic solution offering smart traffic lights that adapt in real time to current traffic conditions. These intelligent lights optimise timing based on vehicle, pedestrian, and cyclist flow and prioritise emergency vehicles. By reducing congestion and unnecessary stops, ScanMyCity aims to cut emissions and improve urban mobility.

The event, held under EXPER, will include business pitches from each team, allowing them to demonstrate their business plans to an audience of experts, investors, and university representatives.
